The Tonic EP recalls some of my earliest musical memories growing up in Manchester...the jungle blasting out of cars zooming way too fast through the estates and the soul jazz that Sam always used to play at Muhammad’s Peace & Love barbershop in Moss Side.
I recorded the EP in just over a week in November. Winter was always going to be a little colder than usual this year and so I wanted to make my own little remedy...there’s something about warm and spacey textures over breakbeats that says to me, “don’t worry, you’ve got this and if you don’t, then just imagine a new way forwards”.
The voyage continues.
For the music geeks:
- Break chopping duties were fairly equally divided between the MPC 2500, the Digitakt and Ableton
- Main synths used: Moog Sub 37, Juno 106, Korg Triton (rack) and Yamaha DX11
- Newest studio discovery: if you play a minor 11 chord on a Rhodes through a chorus pedal in a dimly lit room, it feels like travelling through Space
- Further listening: B.B. King “Live At The Regal”, Miles Davis “In A Silent Way”, Return To Forever “Where Have I Known You Before”, A Guy Called Gerald “Black Secret Technology”, Marc Cary “Rhodes Ahead”, Kemistry & Storm “live at the Edge 1995 (mix)”
